UPDATE: I have created a new VM with SharePoint 2013 SP1 and SQL Server 2014 on Windows Server 2012 R2. Since the time I created this SharePoint 2013 Virtual machine using the preview version on Windows Server ’08 quite a few enthusiasts have asked if I could upload one with SharePoint 2013 RTM and Win Server 2012. So I spent some time these holidays to create and upload one. Here it goes…
- The VM was created using the VMWare Player version 6 which can be downloaded as a free download from the VMWare site.
- It was created using the 180 day evaluation versions Windows Server 2012, SQL Server 2012 (see below) and the SharePoint 2013. If you’d like to, you can enter your own keys to activate the trial/ evaluation versions.
- It consists of 6 hard drives and a VMWare virtual machine configuration (.vmx) file. Both the configuration file and hard drives are part of self-extracting .rar files (with the actual total current size at about 35 GBs) which can be downloaded from the download links below.
- It has 8 GBs of RAM allocated to it by default (controlled by the settings in the “.vmx” file or via the virtual machine settings in the VMWare player )
- It has the Classic Shell start menu installed from http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ so you can get the old Windows start menu in addition to the new Windows “Start screen”. This also results in Windows booting up to the desktop instead of the new Windows start screen. Although, if you’d like to, you can get to the Start screen by clicking the Shift+Windows button combination. You can also configure Classic Shell so Windows boots up to the start screen instead, if you so desire.
- It has the start-up type for a few non-necessary Windows and SQL services changed to “Manual” or “Delayed start” to conserve overall and start-up resources. This includes services for the SQL Server 2012 SSAS, SSIS and SSRS features which I installed just in case anyone needs them.
- Has the Apps service configured to use the URL apps.sp2013.gauravmahajan.net
- Once you fire up the Virtual machine, Windows will auto login to the Administrator’s account. The “sp20130\administrator” account is the account used to install SharePoint and should be used to access central admin.
- The virtual machine additionally has the following accounts:
sp_adminuser: This is a regular user account I created to be added as a site collection admin. This account has site collection admin privileges on the default site collection on the port 80 Web App
sp_apppool_content: This is the app pool account for web applications
sp_apppool_service: This could be used as the app pool account for the service apps that you may configure
sp_cache_supperreader and sp-cache_superuser: The object cache access user accounts
sp_farm: The farm account that is configured while installing SharePoint
sp_search: The search service account
sp_searchcrawl: The search crawl account
sp_service: This account is used for various service applications
sqladmin: This is the SQL server service account - All accounts in the VM share the same password which is part of the ReadMe file accompanying the downloads.
Finally, all the files, including the ReadMe.txt are uploaded to the Google Drive folder at the following link: http://goo.gl/klswrr
To download the files, you can go with either of the following options:
- Add the folder to your Google Drive and then use the Google Drive Desktop Client to sync the files to your local computer (also recommended) OR
- Download the files directly by using the browser “Save target as…” functionality (least recommended)
Instructions for extracting the VM: You will need to download all the .rar and .exe files to your machine and then run the “SP2013.exe” executable to unpack the virtual machine hard drives. After ensuring that you have the latest version of the VMWare Player installed, you can then double-click the “SP2013.vmx” file to run the virtual machine.
Instructions to activate the licenses on the VM with SQL 2012: The evaluation versions of the OS, SharePoint Server and SQL Server 2012 that the earlier virtual machine was running on have expired. Here’s how you can bypass the issue and activate the licenses for those who would still like to use the VM with SQL 2012 (please note that I have also provided above a link for an alternate VM with SQL 2014 that does not need the licenses to be activated yet):
- For the OS (Windows Server 2012): You can either:
- Rearm the evaluation version by running he following command from the command prompt: slmgr /rearm. This will extend the OS evaluation for another 180 days. Note that you will be able to do 4 more such rearms before having to convert the license to retail
- Convert to a retail license: You can view the instructions to do so in the comments below here and in the corresponding TechNet article here
- For SQL Server 2012: Unfortunately there’s no way to rearm a SQL Server Evaluation license. You will have to convert it to a retail license. The way to do that is to:
- Run the SQL Server setup
- Click on the maintenance tab
- Click on “Edition upgrade”
- Follow the steps till you reach the product key screen and enter your product key (usually pre-filled if a licensed installation media is used)
- You can read a good set of instructions for converting your eval license to a full license here: http://www.mssqlgirl.com/upgrading-from-sql-server-2012-evaluation-edition.html
- For SharePoint Server 2013:
- Browse to Central Admin –> Upgrade and Migration –> Convert farm license type
- On the Convert License Type page, in the Enter the Product Key box, type the new product key and then click OK.
- Verify that the license is upgraded by going back to the page

Thanks for appreciating. Yes, you should be able to join this VM to your domain. You may however need to demote this VM from being a dc (although I am not entirely sure if you will absolutely need to do this) and make related changes.

Does it require 8 gb RAM? My laptop has only 8 gb RAM and I suppose it will die if I allocate all the memory to VM. Any suggestions please?

8 GB is the minimum recommended. However if you have 8 GB overall in your laptop, you may be able to work by allocating lower RAM (4-6 GB) to the VM by stopping a few additional services in the guest OS. I was able to work by allocating 4 GB to the VM on my other laptop that has 8GB of total RAM (like yours) but only by stopping these few services. I know that the search service, for example, can eat up the RAM pretty fast so that may be something you’d like to look at. Having said that, I’d definitely recommend upgrading the RAM if you can.

Question that may be pretty sophisticated, from what I understand the CMIS support that previously was in Sharepoint 2010 by installing the admin-toolkit is now ‘built in’ to Sharepoint 2013….however I’m lost on how to enable CMIS support. If someone knows, please share.

Sorry if i’ve missed something simple, this is my first Sharepoint installation ever. When i try to go to the SharePoint Central Admin, I get “Sorry, this site hasn’t been shared with you.” I’ve tried running as administrator and no luck. I can go to localhost and it works just fine. Would you have any clue as to what may be going on?
Hey Bill! Did you login to the central admin site as the “administrator” user? It might have logged you in as the “admin_user” user instead and that’s the reason why you may be getting the message. Let me know if that helps. Thanks!

My humble apologies. I have run out of space on my google drive and there are not a lot many places where I can upload such large files and that also provide the ease of download to the users that skydrive and google drive do. I am working on finding better hostage solutions that don’t cost as much but in the meantime this is the only solution I could find that balances both the upload and download requirements.
Also, I personally have tried the file downloads from other places and have found the download speeds of skydrive comparable. Although, the large file sizes may be a possible reason for the slow downloads, no matter whether we upload them to skydrive, google drive or any other file hosting service.
My sincere apologies again for not being able to be of much help.

I’ve just completed the download and setup of the VM, but i’m receiving a message that the evaluation license has expired. As a result, the server shuts itself down every hour. Is anyone else experiencing this? I can’t apply one of my MSDN licenses to it, because it’s an eval version – is there a way for me to get another eval key, or extend this one?

Thank you for downloading the VMs and posting your issue here. It is odd that the license expired for you since it was only created in January 2013 and the evaluation license is valid for 180 days. My copy of the VM is still showing me 157 days validity for the license. Would you mind running the following command at an elevated command prompt and sending me the results: “slmgr /dlv”? This command gives you the details of the current license. It should give you the following partial product key: “GJCP9”. It should additionally give you the number of days to license expiration. You can try to extend the evaluation by using the slmgr /rearm option. If however, you’d like to convert the evaluation to a full retail version, you can get the details of doing so in the following TechNet article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspx

OK… so I was able to successfully activate Windows on the VM. The way to do that is to download and install a retail version and select the option to upgrade Windows during the installation process. I did face an issue after the installation in that the Security Token Service Application started logging certificate errors. I was however able to easily resolve it by re-provisioning the service application using the following PowerShell commands:
$stsApp = Get-SPServiceApplication | ?{$_ -match “Security”}
$stsApp.Provision()

Thank you for your kind words. Regarding the app, the first thing you would want to verify is if the services have been configured correctly. You can do so by simply browsing to the app store from your site collection and installing in one of your site collections, a simple app such as the Bamboo “World Clock and Weather” app or the one of the free news apps. That will tell you if the apps have been configured correctly
If the above steps succeeds, you will want to look at the SharePoint log files to see the error details.
I can also try and help you if you can email me the error log and all the more better: the code for the app

Thanks Gaurav, the call for help was more out of share frustration in getting the app store to accept a simple Microsoft templated app from Visual Studio. I spent too many hours looking at this issue, as I had it in a previous VM before getting yours.
I have since changed tack and I am now deploying to o365 developer site which the same app that errored in the VM’s worked first time in o365.
So that means something is not quite right in my setup but I am happy to build apps in o365 for now and will use your awesome VM for all other dev tasks.

Thank you very much for your kind words and my apologies that you are facing the issue. I think I may know the reason for the problem: The underlying cause is that, for some reason, the SQL server installation did not configure permissions correctly on the “Data” directory. This results in a failure when SharePoint tries to create the database for the service application. To overcome the issue you will need to manually grant the “SQLServerMSASUser$SP2013$MSSQLSERVER” Read and Write access to the data directory. You can also read about it in a related blog post here: https://gauravmahajan.net/2013/01/30/configuring-apps-for-sharepoint/. Strangely enough, I did not receive this error while creating the web app on port 80. Anyway, I’ll request you to let me know if this solves your issue so I can update the blog post for others benefit too.

7. Has sp13123!@# as the password for all the accounts
That is very much the password that has been used for all the accounts and pass phrases for the VM and I have not used sp123!@# anywhere. One of the reasons though that I have seen when the VM does not start is if all the files have not been downloaded or have been partially downloaded. Were you able to start the VM before? If not, I will recommend verifying that the files have been correctly downloaded and optionally re-download any files that you suspect to be corrupt or incomplete.

I had created this VM in the 1st week of January. The trial versions are valid for 180 days so I don’t know why it should give you that error. I verified with my copy of the Virtual Machine and am getting no such errors. Could you provide me with some more details – when do you receive the error any screenshots etc.? Odd as it may sound, sometimes this can happen when the files do not get downloaded correctly or are corrupt. Some of the options you can try are:
1. Rearm the VM by running the following command from an elevated command prompt: slmgr /rearm
2. Run the SQL server installation and enter the license key when prompted.
Although, as mentioned above, you should not really have received the error since the evaluation is still valid till at least June 2013.

You don’t need to uninstall hyper-v. The way to switch between using hyper-v and VMware is the following:
Open an elevated command prompt on your Win-8 machine. When you want to use VMware, just run the following command and reboot: “bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off”
Once you are done using VMware and would like to use Hyper-V again, run the following command and reboot: “bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto”. That way you will be able to switch between using hyper v and VMware.
The other option that you have is to convert the .vmdk files to vhds’ and then open them in Hyper-V. There are various tools and utilities available to do so.

For those who are getting a 500 error when accessing the second link:
Google Drive seems to be having an internment issue where the publicly shared folders are not accessible: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/drive/s3cKirEuDYs
The workaround is to use this link in the meantime: https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B9wZANcWVSfDdHNzMGx3c01VUWc/edit

Dear Gaurav,
I can download sucessfully the remaining file sp2013-part08.rar as your updated link but I’m not sure that this is a correct file becasue the first 7 files was modified on 31/3/2013 but the last file (part08) is previous version that modified since Jan.4, 2013.
When I try to extrace those file (1-8) then I got the error messeage on the last file is corrupted, please advice. Thank you so much

When trying to unpack the rar files with WinRar 4.2 I got the errror “SP2013.part08.rar: CRC failed in SP2013\SP2013.vmdk. The file is corrupt”. Nobody here seemed to have any problerms unpacking the files,

Thanks for creating this, Im a total sharepoint Newbie, its been a great help.
If your using this in the UK, the server is setup with an American Keyboard so if you’re using an English UK Keyboard and cant login remember the @ symbol is “Shift+2” and the # symbol is “Shift+3”

Its an easy fix. You just have to change the keyboard to UK in the regional settings. Just thought I’d post my issue just incase someone form the UK cant login to the server. If they have issues they can just use the “@ symbol is “Shift+2″ and the # symbol is “Shift+3″ fix I mentioned above.

Thank You for sharing the fix. I am sure it will benefit others as well.
Regarding the video streaming, unfortunately, I am not aware of anything out of the box but I’d start looking at any .net based non-SharePoint solutions to begin with. If there’s a way to do it that way, I am sure, we can port it into SharePoint. It will be interesting to see though what kind of solutions are out there and it will be great if you can share any findings that you come across..

Sorry you are facing the issue. Unfortunately this is the first time I am seeing such an issue or that someone has mentioned this to me but we’ll try and resolve it. There are a couple of reasons that I can think of but the most common one that I could find by searching online was the fact that VMWare may have placed a lock on the file that did not get released. To get rid of the problem, people have recommended deleting any “.lck” files that may be present in your virtual machine folder(s). It will also help going through the vmware.log files to see if the actual problem is detailed there.
Another thing that I can think of is to try extracting the files again in another folder. So I can better help you with this, could you please also let me know the VMWare tool that you are using to launch the VM and also its version?

Thank you for downloading the VM and for your kind feedback. From what I know (and I am not an expert at this so you may want to investigate further), you cannot directly open in esxi such VMs created with VMware player or workstation. I did find a few articles though that you may find useful in case you’d like to do that:

In addition, you may want to check the version of esxi to see if it supports windows server 2012 in the guest
